He studied Graphic Design at Elisava, currently the Faculty of Design and Engineering of Barcelona, where he has been teaching since 1988.

He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Design and Graphic Production from ISEC, Lisbon (2019), and a Postgraduate Degree in Project Management and Communication in Applied Design, Mention in Research, from Elisava, TGRAF ISEC Lisbon (2020). He is currently a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.

Since 1983, he has worked in several studios, and in 1992 he founded Propaganda, which he directed until 1998, when he began working independently.

His work focuses mainly on editorial design and corporate identity. His clients include a range of national and international institutions and companies such as the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), Ajuntament de Barcelona, “la Caixa”, Abacus, T de Teatre, Generalitat de Catalunya, Grup 62, Casals, Fundació Bofill, Grupo Z, La Vanguardia, the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Penguin Random House, The Boston Phoenix, RBA, Sala Beckett, The Chicago Reader, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, The New York Times, IESE, Casals, and the Museu Picasso.

He was director of the Postgraduate Course in Advanced Typography at Eina, in association with the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and has taught at the IE School (Madrid) and at the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi (Finland). He is currently a lecturer in the Master’s Degree in Art Direction in Advertising at Blanquerna – Universitat Ramon Llull, and in the Master’s in Design and Art Direction in Packaging at Elisava – Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona). He also teaches in the Master in Publishing at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra / Barcelona School of Management, and collaborates in the Master in Publishing at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

He is also a lecturer in the Course on Advanced Technologies for the Dissemination and Valorization of Cultural Heritage at the National University of Distance Education (UNED).

He has been a regular collaborator at Barreira School of Design (Valencia), IDEP, and BAU (Barcelona). He has also taught online at ESdesign, currently at Shifta (by Elisava), at the Cursiva Publishing School, and has four courses available on the Domestika.org platform.

In 2007 he published Twenty-two Tips on Typography (that Some Designers Will Never Reveal) and Twenty-two Things You Should Never Do with Letters (that Some Typographers Will Never Tell You) with Actar, and in 2012 Pensar con imágenes with Gustavo Gili — books translated into several languages. In 2018 he published Así se hace un libro and Life is sho with Arpa. In 2021 he released Cinquanta i tants consells sobre tipografia, a revised and updated version of Twenty-two Tips…, translated into Spanish and Polish, published by GG. In 2023 he published Per què les pàgines són així, also with GG, translated into Spanish.

He curated the exhibition Los libros de Barcelona. Diseño y edición, commissioned by the DHub / Museu del Disseny, held at the Museum of the Arts of the University of Guadalajara (MUSA), Mexico.

In October 2009 he received the National Culture Award for Design, granted by the Government of Catalonia.

He has received several awards, including the European Design Awards, Laus, D&AD Awards, and Malofiej for infographics.

From 2005 to 2009 he served as President of the Association of Art Directors and Graphic Designers (ADG-FAD).
